Life |
Born in 1936, he first learned
music from his mother who studied under Gustav Holst ("The
Planets"). At age 17 he won a scholarship to the Royal
Academy of Music in London. Three years later he was awarded a
French government scholarship to study in Paris under Pierre Boulez
and Olivier Messien. He taught a the Royal Academy in London,
and at the Peabody Institute of Music in Baltimore, Maryland.
He currently lives in New York. |

His many award-winning
compositions include every genre, including film, the stage and
jazz. His commissioners include: London Symphony, New
York Philharmonic, St. Louis Symphony, National Symphony, BBC
Philharmonic, Royal Ballet, BBC Proms, Julian Bream, Evelyn Glennie,
John Harle and Stan Getz.
Recent highlights include: James DePriest's conducting
of the Oregon Symphony's September 1988 US premiere of
"Partita"; the upcoming March 28 US premiere of the
Saxaphone Concerto by soloist John Harle and New York's Eos
Ensemble; and the film score for John Slessinger's new television
movie "Sweeney Todd" which receives its world premiere in
the US later this year. |
